Google result Monday 9 November 2009 - clipAround lunch time Monday I documented the following client enquiry. I wanted the client to understand that if we wish Google to display particular text then we really have to include that text in our page; that's the simple bit; and then we need to 'engineer' the site and the page so that the particular text is displayed by Google. I gave this blog entry the title "What text do you want to come up in Google". I captured the image from the first page of google.com.au listings for a key word search on "drupal seo" mid-afternoon of the same day. The text "What text do you want to come up in Google?" is displayed prominently by google. Within 2 hours of my posting that title. Well, is that a good result? The result of course is built on SEO work I've gradually done on this site over a long period of time. The basic infrastructure has been proven, I think. And still there is more to learn and more to do.
Currently even when it is in the listings, only the site menu items are printed out. Google does not display any real text to describe the site.
It is immediately apparent to me that the design of your home page gives Google little choice but to feature your Drupal menu.
When google does list your site, it just shows your menu options and there is not much for searchers to evaluate your site on. They are not really shown immediately the value of your site, and thus they are reluctant to invest the time in clicking through to you.
Compare that situation with what comes up for this site, when you search on 'drupal seo' in the Australian listing. Towards the top or at the top of the google au page is the text:
Google result Monday 9 November 2009 - keywords drupal seo "I want to help people needing Drupal SEO find this site; and find my phone number - here it is: 03 5968 1541. Perhaps I can help you. ..."
That's a clear statement of my intent for the SEO aspect of my site, and that statement did not get towards the top of the google au listing by chance.
I think the answer to your question is - we need to extend your design to incorporate the text that you wish to be highlighted in the google listings. And we need to extend the site engineering so that particular bit of text gets chosen by google as the 'summary' of your site, and presented in the listings. Is that an achievable goal? Probably not always... but... the proof of the possibility is in the example from my own site SEO, above.
We need to do some site engineering so that your intent for your site comes up clearly in the google listing. That way, when your site comes up in the google listing people will have a clear idea of why they should click through to your site. I believe it is possible to achieve that outcome.
If we wish to only focus on the "{client name}" keywords we really just need to collaborate to find a way to add more text to your home page, whilst retaining the visual design focus. But I think that is not really the result you are looking for. You want your site to come up prominently for a range of keyword searches, especially "{client business focus}".
If we wish to achieve the desired outcome of having your site coming up prominently for "{client business focus}", we need to take a more comprehensive approach.
The first and necessary phase of that work would be for me to check the installation and configuration of your site, and report to you what I find, along with my advice. Until end November 2009 I can give you a fixed price of $A420 plus GST for that preliminary service.
A 45 minute consultation / site review - at your office - is included in that price {offer only valid for Melbourne clients; other clients will receive equivalent Skype or phone consultation}. At that consultation I will map out an approach that will be needed to increase your SEO potential over the coming months and year or so. I'll also be in a position to quote you for the necessary work. That quote would take the form of a fixed price for a 'setup phase' and an optional ongoing monthly 'SEO tuning' fee.
Call me again on 03 5968 1541 if you wish to discuss, or ask any questions about the service I am offering by email, or let me know to invoice you for a 50% prepayment ($yyy + GST) for the preliminary investigation.
(GST payable on all services for Australian clients. International clients please enquire re current prices in $US. Paypal accepted for international client payments.)
